Bite Problems (Malocclusion)

Bite Problems & Gaps: A Non-Surgical Success Story

Many patients come to our office believing that surgery is their only option for correcting serious bite problems (what dentists call “malocclusion”). Today, I want to share an inspiring case that demonstrates how modern dentistry can sometimes offer less invasive alternatives.

From Consultation to Discovery: More Than Just Gaps

A young man visited our office with noticeable gaps between his upper front teeth that affected his confidence when smiling. However, upon examination, we discovered that his case was more complex than just spacing issues. He had a bite problem where his lower jaw sat more forward than ideal (technically called a “Class III” bite). This type of bite issue often makes people feel like their lower jaw sticks out too far.

Traditionally, such cases often require jaw surgery. However, after careful evaluation and discussion with the patient, we developed a conservative treatment plan that would address both his appearance concerns and help his teeth fit together better.

Treatment Strategy: Three Steps to Transformation

Instead of rushing into surgery, we utilized a combination of modern dental approaches:

  1. Clear Aligner Therapy: We started with clear aligners to gradually move the teeth into better positions. Think of this as laying the foundation for the final result.
  2. Targeted Tooth Movement: When we encountered some challenges with the aligners (which is normal in complex cases), we used specialized temporary anchors to achieve the precise tooth movements we needed.
  3. Conservative Porcelain Veneers: Once the teeth were in the right positions, we used ultra-thin porcelain veneers to create the final aesthetic result. Importantly, we kept all our preparation work in the outer layer of the teeth (the enamel), preserving their natural strength.
